Received a signed PDF? Check it before you rely on it

A signature mark on a page is easy to copy. What counts is the electronic signature inside the file. CEI One checks it on iPhone or Mac, without an ID card, and tells you in plain words what it found.

Step by step

Verification, step by step

  1. 01

    Keep the original file

Save the PDF exactly as you received it, for example from Mail to Files. Do not print it to PDF or re-save it from an editor: a new copy can lose the signature or show up as modified.

  2. 02

Open it on the verification screen

On iPhone, open verification in CEI One and choose the file from Files. On Mac, in Analyze PDF, drag the file into the window or choose it from disk. You do not need the card, but you need internet access for a full revocation check.

  3. 03

Read the result for each signature

For each signature you see whether the document is unchanged, whether the signature is cryptographically correct, who signed and with which certificate, the trust chain, the signing time from the timestamp and the revocation status.

  4. 04

    See what changed after signing

The report shows the document's revisions and whether changes or annotations were added after the last signature. A PDF signed by two parties has two signatures, each with its own result.

  5. 05

If something is wrong, ask for the original

If the document shows as modified or the signature does not validate, ask the sender for the original file. For eID-signed documents, you can get a second check from the MAI service “Verificare document semnat cu CEI” on HUB.

Good to know

How to read the result

02

Issuers the app recognizes

The app recognizes the MAI root for eID certificates and the certSIGN root, plus the certificates Apple's system trusts. Qualified status is shown from the certificate's own statement, without a check against the EU Trusted List.

03

Checking online and offline

A check you start downloads revocation lists from the issuers. Library documents are checked automatically on the device, offline, using only the document's own data; “Verify again” gives you the full check.

04

Verification does not change the file

The analysis only reads the PDF. You can keep the document with its result in the app's history, or export the result as a PDF report with Export report.

Straight answers

Frequently asked questions

01Do I need my ID card to verify a signed PDF?

No. Verification does not use the card, the CAN or the PINs.

02Can I verify PDFs signed with certificates other than the eID?

Yes, if it is a compatible PDF signature. The trust result depends on the issuer: the app recognizes MAI, certSIGN and the certificates Apple's system trusts.

03What does “modified after signing” mean?

That further changes were written to the file after the signature. Sometimes they are legitimate, for example a second signature. The report shows what was added after each signature.

04Why do I need internet access?

To find out whether the signer's certificate was revoked. The app downloads revocation lists from the addresses in the certificates.

05How is this different from the HUB MAI check?

The MAI service checks eID-signed documents you upload to HUB. CEI One checks the PDF on your phone or Mac and explains each signature, without uploading the document anywhere.
